Rank Hovis traces its history back to 1875 when Joseph Rank, born into a milling family, first saw the potential of grinding wheat with steel rollers in preference to millstones. Joseph Rank built his first roller mill in Hull in 1885/86 and in 1889 Joseph Rank Ltd was formed.
Rank Hovis grew rapidly from a single site into the UK 's largest flour producer and was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1933 as a public company called Ranks Ltd. The company survived bombardment during the Second World War although many mills were hit and the Government took full control of the flour mills as bread was rationed.
In 1962 Ranks Ltd acquired the Hovis McDougall company, to become Ranks Hovis McDougall and the RHM group was born.
RHM was acquired by Tomkins plc in December 1992 and subsequently delisted
from the London Stock Exchange. RHM, including Rank Hovis, was later
sold on to a private equity firm Doughty Hanson in August 2000.
