Hovis announces winner of its popular Bakery Scholarship

After a lengthy application process and stiff competition from fellow eager contenders, victorious baking trainee, Gabrielle Smith from Ashton-Under-Lyme, has been awarded with the coveted Hovis Bakery Scholarship.

Developed by Rank Hovis technical sales manager, Colin Lomax, the Scholarship has been running successfully since 2004 and provides ambitious baking students with the chance to broaden their industry knowledge through a hands-on approach.

It involves an intensive six day course, offering successful applicants the opportunity to explore various areas of the Hovis business, including the flour mills, craft bakery, Rank Hovis technical department and the new product development area.

Proud Gabrielle is studying NVQ3 Baking and Confectionary at Tameside College and said: "I’m ecstatic to have won the Scholarship. Hovis is a brand I grew up with, so it's extremely exciting to have the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes and learn about the different baking processes and techniques that are involved."

Colin, who has worked for Hovis for 35 years, said, "Gabrielle showed real commitment and passion during her interview and with her solid baking credentials, we felt that she was the perfect candidate. The experience she will gain from the Scholarship will help her determine what part of the industry she’d like to work in the future and all of us here at Rank Hovis are looking forward to showing her the ropes."
