2006 – HOVIS CELEBRATES 120 YEAR BIRTHDAY |
Hovis, Britain’s number one bread brand, will celebrate 120
years of goodness this May, with a £1million worth of activities
including the return of the famous ‘Boy on the Bike’ television
advert, a heavyweight PR campaign and new radio advertising to
drive sales of Hovis Wheatgerm.
The classic television advert will be re-aired for ten days
from 10th May 2006, featuring the new Hovis Wheatgerm Limited
Edition packaging. Originally aired in 1973, the advert
went on to win the hearts of the nation, as well as five prestigious
awards and a much prized spot on Channel 4’s recent ‘Best
TV Commercials of All Time’.
It is 120 years since Richard ‘Stoney’ Smith, a
third-generation miller from Staffordshire, revolutionised baking
by perfecting a way to bake great tasting bread with added wheatgerm
goodness. Since 1886, Hovis has milled and used this wheatgerm
flour to bake Hovis Original Wheatgerm, using the time-honoured
technique patented by Smith.
As part of the celebrations, Rank Hovis are offering every 6th
bag of 16kg or 32kg Hovis Wheatgerm flour or bread mix at the
special promotional price of £1.20. This promotional price
is valid until June 30th 2006.
The promotion will also feature new point of sale material which
features a ‘Boy on the Bike’ image from the famous
1973 commercial directed by Ridley Scott, and nostalgically echoes
a time when bread was hand-wrapped in brown paper. Posters, wobblers,
stickers and ‘Open’/’Closed’ signs will
be available in this celebratory POS package. |

2006 - RANK HOVIS GETS FRESH AT FOOD & BAKE |
From the 19th to 22nd March Rank Hovis exhibited
at Food & Bake 2006 showcasing the versatility and quality
of Rank Hovis’s branded flours through demonstrations in
a working bakery on site. The samples of Hovis sandwiches and rolls
and Fleming Howden cake mix products portrayed to our customers
the consistent quality of the Hovis and Fleming Howden flours and
mixes.
Our visitors enjoyed mini breakfast bacon rolls made from
Granary, White Granary, Best of Both and Hovis Wheatgerm as
well as ‘Honey and White Chocolate Bliss’ muffins
served for breakfast, all complimented with a fresh Rombouts
coffee. At lunchtime, the stand continued to be a hit as we
served fresh Hovis sandwiches followed in the afternoon by
mini cream tea scones, made from the newly formulated Polar
Scone mix.
Rank Hovis demonstrated a range of mixes available
including our latest limited edition mix 'Honey and White Chocolate
Bliss', as well as information about new limited edition mixes

November 2005 - BAKING INDUSTRY SUMMIT

Rank Hovis sponsored the Baking Industry
Summit 2005 exploring “future issues for health and business
health”.
The summit was held on the 24th November 2005 in London, and
provided a unique insight into the current issues affecting today’s
baking industry. Delegates gathered to hear the opinions of expert
speakers – from Caroline Flint, Minister for Public Heath
to Professor Graham Macgregor of St Georges Hospital. The insightful
presentations ranged in theme from health issues affecting today’s
society through to panel discussions about future products, sales
and retail outlets.

leading decision makers and many insights about future issues
concerning the baking trade, the Baking Industry Summit was informative
and illuminating.

2005 – BLOCKBUSTER PROFITS WITH ELEPHANT
ATTA

From December 2005 to January 2006
Elephant Atta, the UK’s leading brand of chapatti flour,
ran an exciting on-pack Bollywood promotion. Consumers could
choose from three major Bollywood film DVDs, which were available
free with a single purchase of a 32kg or 25kg pack, or with purchase
of two 10kg bags of Elephant Atta. Consumers simply cut out and
completed the voucher printed on the pack and sent it to the
given address in order to receive their free DVD.
The DVD promotion was supported by a major national TV campaign,
across all key Asian satellite and cable TV channels. Distinctive
promotional packaging made the product stand out in-store and
striking point of sale material was supplied and sited free to
retailers.
There were three Bollywood family films to collect; “Waqt”,
due for December release starring legendary Amitabh Bacchan and
Akshaye Kumar, “Chalte Chalte” starring Shah Rukh
Khan and Rani Mukherjee and “ Kuch na kaho” starring
Aishwarya Rai and Abhishekh Bachchan.
